Course Description:

This webinar will review the evidence for and the practicalities of applying concepts of high-intensity intervention for adults and those over 65 years of age with CNS injuries (stroke, brain injury, and spinal cord injury).

Course Objectives:

1. Describe the evolution of evidence in terms of specificity, repetition, and intensity, and its impact on walking outcomes following CNS injuries.
2. Define and be able to accurately estimate cardiovascular intensity using age-predictive models of max heart rate.
3. Discuss the role and application of applying intensity to walking while incorporating important concepts of motor learning to address deficits in the biomechanical subcomponents of gait.

More About the Speaker:

Hallie Zeleznik, PT, DPT, is the Director of Strategic Initiatives and Professional Development for UPMC Centers for Rehab Services in Pittsburgh, PA. She is a Board-Certified Neurologic Clinical Specialist with 20 years of clinical experience and specific expertise in rehabilitation in brain injury, stroke, vestibular disorders, concussion, and post-intensive care syndrome. Her professional roles involve clinical practice, program development and implementation, quality improvement, leadership, and clinical mentoring and teaching. She serves as a faculty member for UPMC Centers for Rehab Services Neurologic & Geriatric Residency Programs. She is both a Clinical and an Adjunct Faculty member in the University of Pittsburgh Department of Physical Therapy. Hallie has served in various roles for the Academy of Neurologic Physical Therapy, including the Knowledge Translation Taskforce addressing the Clinical Practice Guideline: A Core Set of Outcome Measures for Adults with Neurologic Conditions Undergoing Physical Therapy. She served a 4-year term on the American Board of Physical Therapy Specialties' Neurologic Specialty Council from 2017-2020. Currently, Hallie is the Co-Chair of the ANPT’s Moving Forward Knowledge Translation Taskforce and an article reviewer for the Academy of Acute Care Physical Therapy’s development of a Clinical Practice Guideline to recommend a set of core outcome measures in acute care physical therapy.
