Title:
Energy System First Aid for People with Long COVID: Principles and Practices for Physical Therapists

Location: Virtual Webinar

Course Description: Physical therapists are learning something new each day about the presentation and underlying pathophysiology of SARS-CoV-2 infection. Because our collective experience with post-viral fatigue is not entirely new, apparent similarities between the presentations of Long COVID and myalgic encephalomyelitis (ME/CFS) suggest we may apply important learnings from ME/CFS to Long COVID to get started in understanding it while the scientific literature continues to mature. Specifically, data suggests that ME/CFS – a known form of post-viral fatigue – is often under-recognized, so it is also under-treated. This observation highlights the need for physical therapists to identify Long COVID for our own clinical reasoning and to make informed referrals to other health care practitioners as needed. This session will discuss the symptomatology and pathophysiology of Long COVID with respect to post-exertional symptom exacerbation. The content will be used to describe the clinical rationale for offloading affected metabolic systems, or, energy system first aid. Specific, actionable recommendations will be provided to help you bring the energy system first aid concept to patients and clients living with Long Covid on your next clinic day.

Please note: Attendees must be sure to include their full names for attendance and certificate purposes. It is not recommended to share computers while attending a continuing education course as certificates will only be sent to the individual whose full name is shown on the participant list.
