SCD In-Person Meeting: Lymphedema and Clinical Implications in the Physical Therapy Clinic

Course Description: This course will review the anatomy and physiology of the lymphatic system and the clinical presentations, interventions, and the targeted patient population. The course will review the pathology and the associated pathologies of lymphedema. The course will discuss the clinical relevance of lymphedema and physical therapy interventions for patients with the orthopedic, vascular, and cancer-related diagnoses.

Course Objectives:

  1. Identify the components of the lymphatic system and its function
  2. Identify the medical conditions and pathologies that can develop edema and lymphedema
  3. Identify the medical interventions and applications for lymphedema and associated pathologies
  4. Identify the application and contraindications for Manual Lymph Drainage and Complete Decongestive Therapy
  5. After the course, participants will be able to identify lymphedema and associated diagnosis in the clinical setting

Timeline:

  1. Review of lymphatic system and function (10 min)
  2. Review pathologies of lymphedema and associated lymphedema (15 min)
  3. Review treatment interventions of Manual Lymphatic Drainage (15 mins)
  4. Demonstration and review of compression bandaging (10 mins)
  5. Discussion and Questions (10 min)
