Title: A Clinical Practice Guideline for the Use of Ankle-Foot Orthoses and Functional Electrical Stimulation Post-Stroke

Course Description: This webinar will provide participants with information about the need for and development of this clinical practice guideline (CPG) and will highlight important recommendations made. Following the presentation, participants will work in groups in a journal club format with guiding questions to further explore recommendations to enhance learning and application. A larger group discussion will conclude the webinar. Participants should review the published CPG prior to attending the session to become familiar with the document. It is not necessary to read it in its entirety prior to attendance. Access and download the CPG.

Learning Objectives: Upon completion of this webinar, participants will be able to

  1. Discuss the need for a Clinical Practice Guideline to guide decision making for the use of AFO and FES post stroke.
  2. Describe the development process of the CPG.
  3. Discuss key action statements and evidence-based recommendations of the developed guidelines and their application to clinical practice.

More About Our Speakers:

Therese Johnston, PT, PhD, MBA, is Medical Office Director of the Division of Bracing and Supports at Ossur Americas, Foothill Ranch, CA, and Physical Therapist (part-time) at Magee Rehabilitation Hospital, Philadelphia, PA. She was formally a Professor in the Department of Physical Therapy at the Thomas Jefferson University, Philadelphia, PA and continues in an adjunct role. Dr. Johnston received her BA from the University of Pennsylvania, her MBA in Health Administration from St. Joseph’s University, her MS in Physical Therapy from Arcadia University, and her PhD in Physical Therapy from Temple University. Her research has included interventions to improve the health, fitness, and function of children and adults with spinal cord injury or cerebral palsy, with a special focus on the use of functional electrical stimulation and cardiovascular and bone health. More recent research has focused on sports related musculoskeletal issues and biomechanics. Dr. Johnston has published over 50 articles in peer reviewed journals and has presented nationally and internationally. She is a member of the American Physical Therapy Association and Vice-President of the Academy of Physical Therapy Research.

Lisa Brown, PT, DPT, is a Clinical Assistant Professor in the Department of Physical Therapy and Athletic Training at Boston University Sargent College where she is a core faculty member in the Doctor of Physical Therapy Program. Dr. Brown received her Doctor of Physical Therapy degree from the MGH Institute of Health Professions in 2009 with a certificate of Advanced Study in Neurology, and her BS in Physical Therapy from the University of Vermont in 1993. Dr. Brown is an ABPTS Board certified Neurologic Clinical Specialist since 2009. Dr. Brown is Co-Chair of the Clinical Practice Guideline for the Prescription of Orthotics and Neuro-prosthetics in Stroke. She has clinical experience and has presented at state and national conferences on the topics of orthotics and neuroprosthetics. Dr. Brown is a member of the American Physical Therapy Association and the Academy of Neurologic Physical Therapists and has 25 years of clinical practice experience. She currently treats individuals with neurologic disorders at the BU Physical Therapy Center.
