Course Description: Data and context of the healthcare needs of the non-citizen immigrant will be presented, followed by a brief historical review of immigration. Operational definitions related to immigration and migration will be provided. The majority of the course content will feature an overview of current immigration healthcare standards- contrasting the healthcare of the citizen-immigrant with the non-citizen immigrant- with particular emphasis on evaluation and intervention provided by the physical therapist, including caregiver precautions and the identification of “red flags.” A discussion of the PTs and PTA’s mandated role and moral equivalency of caring for this cohort based upon the doctrine of humanism and our codes of ethics will follow. A complex case study will be presented to illustrate the cognitive content and provide a compelling learning opportunity.
